Thursday, September 3. 2009Murrieta Library Closes For Staff In-Service Day
MURRIETA, CA - The Murrieta Public Library has been too successful. Not that anyone is complaining, but as a result of the highly used services, collections, and programs, the Library will be closed on Tuesday, September 15, 2009, so library staff can catch up on the mountain of returned books and requested materials that keep growing every day. The Library will reopen on Wednesday, September 16, at 10:00 a.m.
According to Library Director Loretta McKinney, "As most public libraries nationwide, the Murrieta Public Library experienced a huge increase in all aspects of library services in the last eight months. Individuals are not going on vacations, cannot afford Internet services at home, and are looking for high quality free programs in a great place to enjoy being a family while being part of the community! While we welcome everyone and we are ecstatic that the community is utilizing the Library, it has created a dilemma since there are not enough staff and volunteers to keep up with the demand. Library staff are committed to continuously providing the highest quality services and it has been difficult for us to acknowledge that the Library will have to close for one day to assure the community continues to receive the quality of services to which it is accustomed.” The outside book drops will remain open. All materials due on Tuesday, September 15 should be returned as soon as possible thereafter and will not accrue fines. Although the Friends of the Murrieta Library will still conduct their General Meeting at 10:00 a.m., the Story-time program is cancelled for that evening. Library users who have questions regarding the closure may call the Library at (951) 304-BOOK (2665) or visit the Library's web site at www.murrieta.org/services/library for more information. California of The Past: Presentation of Local Residents' Stories
MURRIETA, CA - A former fire volunteer talks about one of Murrieta"s first barbecues; a local resident tells a story about her grandmother’s immigration experiences to California from Norway. California is rich with personal memories of culture and history, all of which are being captured for present and future generations through the California State Library’s "California of the Past” digital storytelling project. On Saturday, June 6, 2009, the community is invited to the Murrieta Public Library’s special presentation of local residents’ stories, complete with photos, which have been visually recorded for the public’s use. In addition to showing the 12 recordings, several of the community members whose memories have been recorded will be on hand to share insights into their personal stories. The Presentation will take place from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the Library’s Community Room.
The goal of the California of the Past project is to have local residents create a short story from a personal memory they have of growing up in the area and to “capture” the history of California through the vignettes that are digitally recorded. In addition to the oral history, the story tellers are asked to provide some photos to accompany the story being recorded. Stories recorded by the Murrieta Public Library will be downloaded to the Library’s webpage at www.murrieta.org/services/library. All of the resulting stories created throughout California will be downloaded to the statewide website at http://www.digitalstorystation.com. According to Loretta McKinney, Director of Library Services, “This project creates a significant contribution to the history of California because there are a variety of memories being shared, representing a vast time period in the State, and these wonderful memories are visually and orally recorded resulting in the best type of sharing!” Local Historian Rebecca Farnbach portrays the purpose of the project best in her recording, A Peek Into the Past: Finding a View. “Sometimes we think the door to the past is sealed, but every once in a while, we find a crack in the door, and if we take the time to peek through the crack, we can find a treasure trove.” Ms. McKinney stated, “This is just the beginning of the project. The Murrieta Public Library and our co-sponsor, the Temecula Valley Historical Society, hope to recruit more local residents with stories of their own to record, preserve and share for current and future generations!” The Murrieta Public Library’s California of the Past project is in collaboration with the Temecula Valley Historical Society and is funded by a California State Library grant, supported by the U.S. Institute of Museum & Library Services and Technology Act and administered in California by the State Librarian with services provided by MEDIA ARTS CENTER SAN DIEGO. This event is free and open to the public. The Murrieta Public Library is located at Eight Town Square (Adams Avenue and Kalmia Street). Temecula - Wiens Concert to Benefit Winegrowers
Golden Crown Productions is living proof that concerts are about more than just lively music and good times.
Over the past three years the Temecula-based concert organizer and promoter has raised more than $60,000 for a half-dozen local charities. This summer Golden Crown will lend a helping hand to the Temecula Valley Winegrowers Association, a non-profit group that represents more than 70 vintners and growers. All the proceeds from an auction during a July 18 Missing Persons concert at Wiens Family Cellars will benefit the winegrowers group. “The concert at Wiens offers the TVWA the opportunity to raise funds for our ongoing marketing efforts, which are geared towards getting folks into Wine Country,” said Peggy Evans, interim executive director of the winegrowers group. “We’re excited to partner with Golden Crown and appreciative of the support of Wiens Family Cellars in our efforts to do so.” Tickets for the Missing Persons concert start at $59.
