PersonalSteve Flynn, candidate for Murrieta City Council, is currently a Retail Store Manager. Steve moved to California in 1985 when he was enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and met his wife, Melanie, while serving in Los Angeles. They have been married for 14 years and in 1997, moved to Murrieta to ensure a better education and safer environment for their son, Colin. Steve and Melanie currently reside in Murrieta with their 12-year-old son, and father-in-law, Cecil.
Traffic Safety
Steve became involved in the Public Safety Transportation Commission (PSTC) and began to take an active role in the city’s safety. After partaking in monthly ride-alongs with the Murrieta Police Department, Steve began to take great notice of the issue of traffic in the city. He was appointed Chairman of the PSTC in July 2004 and accomplished many things that have held a lasting impact on the community. He helped to place new stop signs across the city, installed a left turn light, and implemented a plan to have a device installed at a stoplight to aid vision-impaired citizens in the community.
Steve also spearheaded the adoption of the “Guidelines and Recommendations to Accommodate Older Drivers and Pedestrians” program making Murrieta one of the first cities in California to adopt the plan. One of the major projects credited to Steve was the installation of the Red Light Camera Program which has proven to cut back on speeding and other traffic violations in Murrieta. Steve continues to participate in monthly ride alongs and DUI checkpoints with the Police Department. He holds safety in top priority as he works daily to ensure that Murrieta is truly A Great Place to Grow” for the city’s children.
Community InvolvementSince moving to Murrieta, Steve has worked tirelessly to ensure the city’s prosperity by taking a lead in committees such as the Public Safety Transportation Commission, the D.A.R.E. Committee, the Murrieta Steering Committee, and the General Plan Advisory Committee. Steve also served in other capacities including the city’s annual Watershed Clean-up, Old Town Murrieta Clean-up, and is a member of the Murrieta Chamber of Commerce. He has been involved in the city budget review processes for the past 3 years. In 2006, Steve helped to bring Murrieta its first Safety Fair on May 6, 2006 which attracted more than 2,000 citizens. Due to the great success of the fair, the city has opted to make it an annual tradition for Murrieta. In addition, he is now on a committee in the process of working on a universal design concept for new homes, which will help physically challenged and elderly navigate through their homes more easily.
Steve is also a member of the Shivela Middle School Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA). In 2004-2005, the work of Steve was noticed by the city when he was nominated for the Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year, a prestigious award given to individuals who benefit Murrieta.
Regardless of everything that Steve has done in the City of Murrieta, his proudest accomplishments remain, and will always remain, his family. Candidate StatementMy family and I moved here for the lifestyle Murrieta offered, in terms of education, safety, and community. As a councilman, I will expand the positive attributes offered now; as well create more opportunities for the citizens of Murrieta. Let’s be proud of where we live, and make sure our children can raise their children here. I care about this community and for that reason we can no longer afford to let it be just Murrieta – it’s time we made it OUR MURRIETA. Steve Flynn — Our Murrieta
