By Inland Empire • Oct 2nd, 2008 • Category: FeaturesOn Sept. 29, 2008, the Rancho Mirage Police Department responded to the 100 block of Ave. Las Palmas in Rancho Mirage for a report of two missing persons. Hal Tobin, 68 years of Rancho Mirage, and Craig Tobin, 42 years of Newport Beach, were missing in Craig Tobin’s Hummer.
On Sep. 30, 2008, Hal Tobin was located after he flagged down a passing motorist on Hwy 74 near Pinyon. H. Tobin was taken to the Pinyon Fire Station, where he was transported to EMC to treat his injuries. Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Hemet Station, was contacted by CHP who located the Hummer off the road in a ravine. A search ensued and Craig Tobin was located at about 6:00 PM walking in a canyon east of Hwy. 74. No rescue attempts were made and the search was discontinued due to darkness and the rugged terrain.
On Oct. 1, 2008, at 0600 hours, the Palm Desert Sheriff’s Station resumed the search, as it was believed C. Tobin was moving toward the City of Palm Desert. C. Tobin was located and it appeared he had fallen trying to climb down the cliff. Riverside County Sheriff’s air unit inserted a rescue team into the canyon, so that Tobin could be air lifted out of the canyon.
At 2:30 PM, Tobin was air lifted and taken by ambulance to Desert Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The Bureau of Land Management, Department of U.S. Forestry, Riverside Mountain Rescue, Desert Search and Rescue, and both CHP and Riverside Sheriff’s air units assisted in the rescue.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department wants to remind everyone to exercise good judgment when hiking on the local trails. Always let someone know where you are hiking and what time you plan on returning. Wandering off marked trails is extremely dangerous as much of the terrain is treacherous for even a skilled hiker.
