By Inland Empire • Jul 1st, 2009 • Category: NewsOn Monday, June 29, 2009 at 6:49 p.m., Hesperia deputies responded to the above location reference a grand theft auto that just occurred. The victim reported that his work van, belonging to the Hesperia Unified School District, had just been stolen from the location. The suspect entered the unlocked van, located a set of keys and took off. The victim witnessed the theft and reported the direction of travel to dispatch. The information was dispatched over the air and Sheriff’s helicopter 40K observed the vehicle driving very erratically westbound on Hwy 173. The Sheriff’s helicopter followed the vehicle until police units were in the area. Deputy Mike Cleary conducted a felony traffic stop on the vehicle on Hwy 138, about one mile east of the I-15 freeway, and arrested the suspect who was identified as Anthony Chavira. Chavira was also found to have a shaved key in his possession.
Anthony Chavira was booked at Victor Valley Jail for grand theft auto, possession of stolen property, and making a key to operate a motor vehicle through means other than the normal duplicating process.
