By Inland Empire • Aug 20th, 2009 • Category: Other NewsThe Redlands Police Department invites residents and local business owners to become part of its inaugural Reentry Academy, designed to inform local residents about the opportunities and challenges surrounding sentenced offenders returning to the community.
The Citizens Reentry Academy is a six-week class that will explore the inner workings of the Redlands Police Department’s operations relating to the criminal justice system, including the department’s Police and Corrections Team (PACT) and interaction with Drug Court.
The purpose of the Citizens Reentry Academy is to provide a well-intentioned cross section of the community with a broad appreciation of the correctional system, provide information on parole and probation issues and correct some common misconceptions of offender reentry.
The academy will present an informative overview of the fundamentals of the justice system, county jail, state corrections, rehabilitation, parole, probation and the involvement of the Redlands Police Department in each of these areas. Classes will be taught by professionals in each of the various arenas.
Students will meet in the evening for three hours, once a week, during the first four weeks of each session. The final two sessions will be held on Saturdays with tours of local correctional institutions.
The purpose of the academy is to create a growing nucleus of responsible, well-informed residents with the potential to influence public opinion in regard to the issues of sentenced offenders returning to our community.
The Citizens Reentry Academy will be held on Wednesday nights from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning Sept. 16 through Oct. 7 at the Joslyn Senior Center, 21 Grant St., followed by two Saturday sessions on Oct. 17 and 24.
Class size is limited. Applications for the course can be obtained at the Redlands Police Department, 30 Cajon St., or either of the Community Policing Stations at 1568 N. Orange St. or 1150 W. Brookside Ave.
For more information, contact Laurie McNeel at the Orange Street Community Policing Station, (909) 798-7534, ext. 7, or (909) 798-7570, ext. 5.
