By Inland Empire • Nov 4th, 2009 • Category: TopicsOn November 2, 2009 at approximately 1:41 p.m., Deputy Pahia was on routine traffic patrol in a marked unit on Arrow Route. Deputy Pahia’s vehicle was almost hit as a Toyota Camry exited the Arrow Plaza Shopping Center at a high rate of speed. Deputy Pahia attempted to stop the vehicle as the driver appeared to be speeding and driving recklessly. The vehicle did not yield to the unit’s emergency lights and accelerated to an estimated 80 mph. Fearing for the safety of pedestrians and other drivers, Deputy Pahia followed the vehicle, watching as the suspect ran the red lights at Archibald, Hellman and lastly Vineyard. The suspect’s vehicle collided into a 2010 Hyundai when he ran the red-light at the intersection of Vineyard and Arrow Route. The Hyundai was being driven by a 19 year old unidentified female.
Once the collision occurred, the suspect, later identified as Patrick Griffin, attempted to flee the scene and became combative with deputies. Deputies administered pepper spray in an attempt to subdue the suspect. Griffin continued to fight with deputies, and a taser was then used successfully to subdue the suspect and take him into custody.
At approximately 1:49 p.m. a 2003 Camry was reported as being stolen from the Union 76 Gas Station at Hermosa and Arrow Route.
It was at this time, that deputies learned from our Dispatch Center that the pursued vehicle was the same vehicle that had just been reported as stolen from Union 76.
The 19 year old victim suffered severe head trauma and did not regain consciousness at the scene. The victim and the suspect were immediately transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. Their medical conditions are unknown at this time.
