Witnesses call reporting man with a gun

Riverside, CA — On Monday January 10, 2010, around 1140 am, Officers responded to the 6700 block of Brockton Ave in the City of Riverside answering a phone call reporting a man with a silver handgun. The witnesses said that a man had a gun in his hand then placed it into his waistband while leaving the area.

Officers checked the area briefly and an alert motor officer located a man matching his description, seated against the north wall of the Walgreens at Central Ave and Magnolia Ave. The motor officer tried to talk the man into putting his hands up and submitting to a search, however the man became aggressive and refused to comply.

Additional officers and supervision responded to the scene and cordoned off the Walgreens parking lot along with the Provident Savings parking lot next door. Officers with Less Lethal and lethal weapons were stationed in covering positions. A Mental Health Worker was summoned to the scene along with a Hostage Negotiator.

The motor officer continued speaking to the man and was able to calm him down, however, the man continued to be non-compliant. At one point the man reached into a hidden area and pulled out a cigarette and lighter. Officers maintained their professional composure long enough to see he was not pulling a gun.

After a little over an hour of speaking with him, the man was convinced to submit to officers directions. He was directed to kneel and placed his hands on his head whereupon a handgun could be clearly seen in the rear pocket of his pants. He complied long enough for officers to approach and physically control him until the gun could be retrieved and made safe.

The gun turned out to be a silver plastic toy handgun.

The man identified himself as Jamal Johnson, 39 years old of Riverside. He was detained and transported to the hospital for mental evaluation.

There is no further information available at this time.
