By Inland Empire • Feb 26th, 2010 • Category: FeaturesInvestigators hope a distinctive belt buckle will lead to identification of a potential murder victim whose burning body was found in a field late Tuesday night.
The unidentified victim, a light-skinned male, was discovered at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, in a field off of Reservoir Road near Wabash Avenue where his body had been set on fire.
A belt buckle with a metal emblem believed to be of a Native American figure was found with the remains. The victim was wearing blue jeans with a size 40 waist and 30-inch inseam.
The burning body was found Tuesday when Redlands firefighters received a call of a vegetation fire in a field near the intersection of Wabash Avenue and Reservoir Road. As firefighters doused the blaze they discovered the burning remains.
Investigators closed the area of Reservoir road west of Wabash for much of the day Wednesday as police and Fire Department arson investigators combed the area for evidence. The death is being investigated as a homicide.
A coroner’s autopsy will be performed to determine cause of death.
Anyone with information on the belt buckle or the identity of the victim is asked to contact Detective Ben Zimmermann at (909) 798-7580 or Redlands Police Dispatch at (909) 798-7681.
